“During that first nervous minute, riders position their hands above the steering wheel and their foot above the brake, poised to take over in the event of a glitch. By the second minute they relax, and by the fifth minute they take their eyes off the road and chat as if they weren’t in the driver’s seat. After that, there’s no way back.”

Ziv Aviram, Former Mobileye President

The current car industry is about $2 trillion dollars a year. Ford believes the autonomous transportation market (cars only) is worth $5.4 trillion year, a sum that makes you wonder why it took the legacy auto industry so long to go after it. Back in 2016, IHS Automotive declared autonomous cars will appear on worldwide roads in big numbers between 2025 and 2035. The 2016 report predicted global sales of autonomous vehicles will rise from 600,000 in 2025 to 21 million in 2035, which at the time was 3-times the number of cars sold in the U.S. in 2017. However, today, there are already more than 21 million self-driving cars on the roads and updated forecasts now project there to be more than 60 million self-driving cars on the road by 2030.

McKinsey & Company predicts that by the time self-driving cars become the primary form of transport sometime prior to 2050, the total number of vehicle crashes will decrease by 90 percent.
